Lazarus definierar två olika sorters coping som ständigt återkommer i forskningen. Dels är det känslofokuserad coping, som han kallar emotion-focused coping, och dels problemfokuserad coping, problem-focused coping. De utgör två sätt Lazarus and Folkman’s model stated that successful coping mechanisms depend on the emotional functions related to the problem. Lazarus classified eight such functions that most of us use for active coping. These include: Self-Control – where we try to control our emotions in response to stress.

In this essay in honor of Donald Oken, I emphasize coping as a key concept for theory and research on adaptation and health. My focus will be the contrasts between two approaches to coping, one that emphasizes style—that is, it treats coping as a personality characteristic—and another that emphasizes process—that is, efforts to manage stress that change over time and are shaped by the

coping strategies (e.g., Ways of Coping Questionnaire; Folkman & Lazarus, 198 8 and the COPE Inventory, Carver et al., 1989). Lazarus, Susan Folkman. Lazarus, Richard S. (författare) Folkman, Susan (författare) ISBN 0826141900 Publicerad: New York : Springer, cop.

In attempting to explain stress as more of a dynamic process, Richard Lazarus developed the transactional theory of stress and coping (TTSC) (Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), which presents stress as a product of a transaction between a person (including multiple systems: cognitive, physiological, affective, psychological, neurological) and his or her complex environment. Coping is the process of executing that response. Although these processes are most easily described as a linear sequence, Lazarus has emphasized that they do not occur in an unbroken stream. Rather, an outcome of one process may reinvoke a preceding process.
